SW6: Lillie Road

Lillie Road is a hidden treasure…

SW6 is justifiably renowned for its magnificent antique showrooms. Lesser known, however, is Lillie Road, whose passionate resident punters can’t wait to tell you about their latest find. This remote half-mile drag is populated by about twenty shops and is, quite literally, hidden treasure. A palpable sense of community – on sunny days you’ll find a hoard of dealers drinking tea together in the sunshine – is key to its success. Each shop has its own speciality, minimising competition and ensuring that Lillie Road really does represent the full antique panoply. You can visit A & L for a French farmhouse table, Maison Artefact for Swedish and French pieces in distressed cream, and Stephen Sprake for its unusual and dramatically presented stock. It’s hard to know who to mention as every shop is exceptional. An emphasis on design and a truly loving approach to stocking has acquired Lillie Road a cultish following amongst collectors. Stock turnover is, despite its remote location, incredibly high.
