Our Story

The P in Plink stands for lots of things. First, of course, is Props. We all know what it’s like to have to quickly source a challenging item. (For the purposes of this example, let’s say you’ve got 24 hours to find 1000 hyper-realistic rubber chickens). It begins with panic, then self-loathing (‘Why didn’t I keep that notebook?’), followed by hours online. At some point a cup of coffee probably gets knocked over. These are the dark nights of the soul in production buying and Plink probably can’t do anything about them. What we can do though, is provide a regular – and occasionally much needed – reminder of just why you fell in love with props in the first place. And, you never know, a quick perusal of our pages may just bring to light a supplier you’d forgotten about or, even, one you’d never heard of in the first place. Perhaps, if you’re really lucky, we’ve done a feature on the prop you’re looking for. Or on something else that suddenly opens up a completely different solution… wait, we take it all back. Perhaps, there is something we can do to help.

Behind every great prop is a great man or woman, and it’s in honour of this that the P in Plink also stands for People. (It sounds cheesier than fondue but it’s true, so we had to say it). The most important people, of course, are you. But we also mean the suppliers we feature, the Professionals (another one!) we interview, the lovely Art Department freelancers who were willing to let us catch some behind-the-scenes footage… we even mean our own bright young team. Plink believes in making connections (that would be the ‘link’) and that we can learn from each other without giving it all away. We’ve already involved hundreds of people and we plan to involve countless more.

Finally, the P in Plink stands for Progress. Over 70 years of film production, the art department has seen many changes and will continue to do so. Never exactly a cream tea in the park, now is both a demanding and an exciting time to work in the props industry. Greater choice of product, shorter lead times, the rise of the consumer/viewer and groundbreaking technological development are picking the pace up. Plink wants to help you keep on top of a changing industry. By constantly tweaking what we offer, we also hope to keep up with it ourselves. It’s been a long development process and we’ve encountered some major setbacks along the way. There was the coder from Croatia who was also a drug dealer. And that other one from Worthing who had ten dogs and a sleep allergy. Oh, and let’s not forget  the minor inconvenience of a major global recession. (Like everyone else in the industry, we needed at least three days sitting on a bench in the rain over that one). We also built some utterly fabulous forums last year, only to realise that no-one has any time for the bloody things these days. Goodness knows, we don’t. We hope you’ll forgive us then, if in many ways we’re still working things out. You could say these are our baby steps. One thing that won’t change though, is how proud we are to be Plinkers over here at Plink Central. We think Plink may just be one of the good things and hope you enjoy everything we create for you.

We have all sorts of exciting developments lined up for the next few months. You can keep up with our Plink story here. (As well as any thoughts or finds too weird to put anywhere else in the website!)
